Sheikh Chilli's maqbara near Kurukshetra. Sheikh Chilli, the one who would make tall claims and narrate tall stories, was also the Sufi saint, who was the spiritual guru of Dara Shikoh [late 17th century]. Sheikh Chehli, as the saint Abd-ur-Rahim was popularly known, had established a madarsa at the historic town of Thanesar in the vicinity of Kurukshetra. The mound on which his madarsa stands has been found to have habitation since the 1st century AD when the Kushanas ruled over the land. Archaeologists have found continued habitation at this site till the late Mughal period. The large physical size of the madarsa buildings and the beautiful tomb [some say that it rivals the Taj] for the Sheikh suggests that Sheikh Chehli would have been a well-liked teacher with a large body of students and a reasonable amount of wealth. Little wonder that apocryphal stories about him and his absent minded adventures have been doing the rounds since then. With the death of Dara Shikoh the sufi tradition in India came under pressure of the more purists among the believers. It would be interesting to find out what happened to the students of this madarsa, when did it go into disuse.
