Rare is the third solo studio album by American singer Selena Gomez , released on January 10, , by Interscope Records. Gomez stated that the album is her "diary from the past few years". Lyrically, it deals with themes such as self-love , self-acceptance , self-worth and self empowerment. The standard edition of Rare features guest verses from rappers 6lack and Kid Cudi. Rare was supported by four singles, with the first three reaching the top 30 of the Billboard Hot : The lead single " Lose You to Love Me ", released on October 23, , topped the Hot , becoming Gomez's first number-one single in the US. Rare received generally positive reviews from music critics , who commended the production and its cohesiveness, with many deeming it Gomez's best album to date; however, a few critics found the songwriting "easy". Rare debuted atop the Billboard , giving Gomez her third consecutive number-one album in the United States.
Selena Gomez was reborn from a hermetically-sealed fantasyland back into reality when, in , she released her second solo record, Revival. Unlike the overproduced electropop of her debut, Stars Dance , Revival reflected her expanding sexuality, power, and interest in telling her own stories; Gomez actualized these objectives by posing nearly nude on the album cover, serving among its executive producers, and working with specific songwriters to help translate her experiences. Besides popping up for the occasional movie role or fashion collaboration, Gomez focused on herself. The song looks at the ways she lost herself in a relationship and solemnly promises to never make that mistake again. When Gomez looks back on toxic relationships wracked with mistrust or self-sabotaging anxiety spirals, her perspective is more grateful than regretful, as if to say that everything in life is a valuable lesson. Low and breathy, her understated vocals are better suited for intimate contemplation than big, belted catharsis. For the first time, Gomez seems to have a grasp on her range and mainly sticks to a husky, bedroom-eyes murmur instead of attempting bravado. Maybe so. Unfortunately for pop stars everywhere, exposing your soul does not equal examining it.
The enchanting accompanying visual for the sparkling song sets her in a loving utopia filled with rainbows and butterflies. Saw us getting older Burning toast in the toaster My ambitions were too high Waiting up for you upstairs Why you act like I'm not there? Baby, right now it feels like. It feels like you don't care Oh, why don't you recognize I'm so rare? Always there You don't do the same for me That's not fair. I don't have it all I'm not claiming to But I know that I'm special, yeah And I'll bet there's somebody else out there To tell me I'm rare, to make me feel rare. Baby, don't make me count up all the reasons To stay with you No reason why you and I are not succeeding At all. Saw us getting older Burning toast in the toaster My ambitions were too high too high Waiting up for you upstairs Why you act like I'm not there? I'm so rare Always there You don't do the same for me That's not fair.
