I was in the cinema for about 15 minutes before I started crying. Not crying as in the occasional tear quietly trickling down my cheek: really sobbing, in that loud, unguarded, emotionally destroyed way that makes people turn around and look at you with alarmed expressions. I gave some suggestions, saw a few daily rushes, said yay or nay to some important decisions and met two or three times with Taron Egerton , who plays me.

Elton John is not a nostalgist. He met Taupin Jamie Bell onscreen by chance after both answered an ad in a British music magazine. He splits his time among multiple homes with Furnish and their sons, ages 8 and 6. In separate phone interviews — Taupin, 69, from his home in California, and John from a tour stop in Copenhagen — the pair discussed putting their lives on film. These are edited excerpts from the conversations.

Rocketman is a biographical musical film based on the life of British musician Elton John. The film follows John in his early days in England as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music through his musical partnership with Taupin. The film is titled after John's song " Rocket Man ". The film had been in development since the s before it was announced in that Focus Features acquired the rights to the film and director Michael Gracey and actor Tom Hardy were set to direct and star in the project respectively. After Hardy and Gracey left the project following creative differences between Focus and John that halted an initial production start in fall , the project languished for several years until Paramount Pictures and New Republic Pictures took over as distributor in April , where Egerton and Fletcher signed on.
On 30 August , the song was certified Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry for sales of , digital downloads and streaming equivalent sales. The song describes a Mars -bound astronaut 's mixed feelings at leaving his family in order to do his job. Rosenthal's account goes on to relate that the notion of astronauts no longer being perceived as heroes, but in fact as an "everyday occupation", led Taupin to the song's opening lines: "She packed my bags last night, pre-flight. Zero hour: 9 a. And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then. Musically, the song is a highly arranged ballad anchored by piano, with atmospheric texture added by synthesizer played on the recording by engineer Dave Hentschel and processed slide guitar. It is also known for being the first song in John's catalogue to feature what would become the signature backing vocal combination of his band at the time, Dee Murray , Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone. The first stanza of "Rocket Man" was thought of by Bernie Taupin while he was on the motorway heading to his parents' home; he had to "repeat it to himself for two hours," which was "unfortunate", but in later interviews he said that since it gave him a hit, it was all worthwhile. The competition called upon independent filmmakers to submit treatments for music videos for one of three Elton John songs from the s, with each song falling within a specific concept category. Her reggae -inflected version of "Rocket Man" was a commercial success, reaching number 12 on the UK singles chart and number two in Australia held off the top spot by Julian Lennon 's " Saltwater ".
